Dark Diamond

images of flames-bdXaPoor Wes–his dad left him the funeral home, the crematorium, and all the nasty deeds that go along with it. One night, he has to make good on a pretty shifty job his dad has contracted for with the asylum for the criminally insane –some poor soul that swallowed a diamond earring–

At least the inmate was reduced to a few pieces that he had to hammer down.

All he had to do after that was scoop him into a box and slap a fake label on it. Homeless John Doe, so sad.

A thought came into Wes’ head about what the driver had said about the diamond being his if he could find it.

“What the hell, might as well give it a shot.”

He sifted through the ash on the tray, past small shards of bone here and there.A flash caught his eye.

Wes reached down and snagged what looked like a small chip of darkened glass, rubbing it against his sweatshirt. He could see the tiny piece of twisted metal that was the stud of the earring, but the stone itself looked like no diamond that he had ever seen before. Heat wouldn’t have done that to a diamond, heat and pressure was what made a diamond, right? It was dark like smoke, with flashes of red inside. He turned it over and over, looking into its depths. Something about it was—really weird—

“Wh—what?”

  1. I have to sift through my cats’ litter boxes, but I sure never found anything like he found! You’ve really got me curious about it too. Great snippet.

    1. LOL I bet not. I’m thinking that Wes was better off BEFORE he found it, though—

    1. I’ll give you a little history–the stone was an earring that a somewhat disreputable orderly had in his ear–one of the patients in the asylum snatched it out of the orderly’s ear and swallowed it, and the orderly slugged him in the stomach. The patient died, but the orderly had connections,so the director called a favor from Wes to conceal the death. As for the stone’s special powers? Hmmm–you might just have to read the whole story 🙂

  11. I wonder how he died. I don’t think swallowing the earring only would have killed him. There must be someone out there after the diamond or whatever was passed for a diamond really is. Better be careful!

  12. Okay, I’ll tell you this much 🙂 the inmate yanked the earring out of the ear of an orderly who had a rather shifty reputation. When the inmate swallowed the earring, the orderly was so angry he punched the inmate in the stomach to make him throw up the ring. It killed him instead. Since the orderly had relatives higher up, the head of the asylum hushed it up and used Wes’ services to hide the death. If you want to know what happened after–well, you’re going to have to read the whole story 🙂

  13. Oh now this is interesting! I wonder what the stone is, it sounds quite unique to look at. This all sounds very intriguing to be naming a criminally insane person’s box of ashes who was bound to have records in the system as Homeless John Doe. Something is very fishy about that. I wonder what’s going on.

  14. The stone is–interesting, and has a storied history 🙂 Could it be that the stone picks its owners instead of the other way around? Hmmm–and that poor unfortunate man. Maybe he was all alone in the world, and we know how computer records can be manipulated-(wink)
