Extended Sins

For my Sunday Snippet, I’m going to post an extension of my Rainbow snippet post since we’re allowed just six sentences 🙂 In this scene, Oz has brought Leah back to her hotel and is trying to gauge just how much influence Ninian has over her; they’re all very worried about Craig’s mother Mary–

“Oz,” she asked, ”what if he doesn’t intend to let me go, what if—he just finishes me off?”

Oz looked down at his hands, trying to think about how to phrase what he needed to say.

“I can’t tell you that, Leah, I wish I could,” he murmured. He brought his eyes up, looking into hers. “Ninian’s stronger than me, stronger than Carl or Craig, he has that mage thing going on, and that kicks his vampire powers up into the stratosphere.” He slowly rose from the couch and started pacing. “We’d have to find a vampire that’s even more powerful than he is, and Carl’s been looking for that for a long time, no lie.” He turned, shrugging his shoulders. “We can’t even do research in the library because he controls it.”

“What if I could get us a library that we COULD use?”

Oz turned to her.

“And just where might that be?”

“I come from a small village about an hour from Edinburgh,” she told him. “We have a nice library there, and we could look up things without being disturbed. The lairds of the village have one too, but their castle is kind of intimidating, to tell you the truth.”

Oz nodded.

“We’ll see what develops, it’s only a train ride away for you, we could probably, well, you know—“

“Use other means?” she said, smiling, and Oz nodded.

“Yeah, like I might have to use now, since it’s getting time for this vamp to retire.”

“Well, are you going to just—fade to black right here?”

“Uh, no, I’m going to get into a phone booth and put on my bat suit,” Oz said with a smirk. “If you don’t mind watching, it’ll be easier if I just do it here.”

Leah nodded. “Go ahead, then.”

“Actually, it’s more like a cloud—“

Leah looked up with a jerk of her head at the muffled tone to Oz’s voice to see him enveloped in a soft grey cloud, shot through with sparkles of black and silver. It was beautiful. She could barely see Oz lifting his hand to her, then fading off with the cloud itself.
