The Last Snippet

This will be my last snippet from my WIP vows Of Heaven–I’ve just been trying to work up the courage to finis. One more chapter, but, for those who are familiar with Hamlet, you know it’s going to be a doozy. The following is a scene where Hamish and Horsinia find out about the gentlemanly test of skill that Claude has arranged:

A knock sounded softly, and Hamish stood, discreetly wiping his eyes as Oscar Morrison, Larry’s PA, entered the room.

“Mr. Winters? I—I have a message for you from Mr. Winters senior and Mr. Easton.” He nervously shifted from one foot to the other, and Hamish and Horsinia both grinned. The little yes-man was wearing that charmingly geeky pink beret again.

Hamish pointed to the poor man’s head and twirled his finger around. Oscar snatched the offending headgear off his curls.

“It’s kind of cold in here, sir, I apologize.”

Horsinia clucked her tongue.

“Put it back on, Oscar, and get to your business, all right?” She looked over at Hamish as he rolled his eyes, and Oscar hurriedly stuck the offending headgear back on his head.

“Thank you, ma’am.” He cleared his throat. “The gentlemen request your presence for a friendly bout of fencing and a test of skill on the green after breakfast; most of the support staff have already left for Denver, so the amenities will be minimal.”

“Fencing?” Hamish questioned. “Why in the hell would he come up with something like that, he knows how long it’s been.”

“Mr. Winter has laid a sort of bet on your skill, sir.”

Hamish snorted softly. “Probably hoping I’ll lose.” He looked Oscar up and down. “What did he bet?”

“The title to his fully restored 1967 GTO, I believe.”

  2. Thank you so much 🙂 I’m trying to stay true to the spirit of Hamlet, and I love the scene where Osric comes to tell Hamlet about the duel, wearing his helmet indoors 🙂
